The Ramona High School baseball team will open the 2015 season this afternoon, March 10, at 4 p.m. at home against the Granite Hills Eagles.
The Bulldogs are coming off a 24-7-1 season that ended with a loss to La Costa Canyon in the San Diego Section Division I Championship game. The Bulldogs advanced to the championship game by defeating El Camino 9-3 in the semi-finals.
The Bulldogs return 10 players from the 2014 team.
“We are really happy with our returning players and the new players on the team,” said Coach Chris Vogt, who is in his sixth season as head coach. “We have a good mixture of experienced and experienced players.”
The Bulldogs are led by all-section shortstop Aaron Bauman and all-section catcher Braiden Ward. Both are seniors and both have signed letters of intent to continue their careers at San Diego State University.
Bauman was the Bulldogs’ leading hitter last season with a .500 average. He had 39 hits, 37 RBIs and scored 40 runs. He had seven doubles, four triples and five home runs. He also was a terror on the base paths stealing 21 bases. He also had a fielding percentage of .918.
Ward hit .362 with 29 hits, 28 RBIs and 22 runs. He had three doubles, one triple and two home runs. His fielding percentage was .977.
“Aaron and Braiden will be leaned on heavily to lead the team,” said Vogt.
The Bulldogs also return four other starters: senior outfielder Josh Pimentel (.341 average, 22 hits, 15 RBIs, 19 runs, 11 stolen bases), senior pitcher/outfielder Logan Boyer (3-1, 1.87 ERA, .327 batting average, 24 hits, 20 RBIs, 19 runs, 10 stolen bases), senior outfielder Austin Brown (.318 average, 20 hits, 13 RBIs, 20 runs, 12 stolen bases) and senior first baseman Jacob Parra (.333 average, 11 hits, nine RBIs, 15 runs).
“Logan will be our Friday night starter,” said Vogt. “Josh is a great outfielder and he can hit. Austin can do it all. He plays the outfield, he can pitch, he can hit, and he can run. Jacob is a hard-working player that has come a long way in his four years.”
Vogt also is counting on senior second baseman Tyler Wiederhoeft (.338 average, 11 hits, nine RBIs, 11 runs, two home runs) to step up and be a leader.
“Tyler had a great summer and fall,” said Vogt. “He had a great year last year and we are expecting a lot from him this year.”
The Bulldogs also return two junior pitchers: Ryan Johnston and Tim Norris. Johnston was 3-2 with a 3.45 ERA and Norris was 4-1 with a 2.68 ERA.
“Ryan and Tim will be our Saturday and Sunday starters,” said Vogt. “They both have great arms and they have a lot of experience.”
The Bulldogs have added three new junior players: infielder/pitcher Matt Ratliff, who transferred from Poway; outfielder/pitcher Ethan Miller, who transferred from Rancho Bernardo; and outfielder/pitcher Ryan Hagan.
“Matt and Ethan are both left-handed power pitchers who can hit and play the infield,” said Vogt. “Ryan is a great outfielder who can pitch.”
The Bulldogs also added three freshmen: catcher/pitcher Quinnton Mack, catcher/infielder Noah Barba and infielder/pitcher Hunter Miller.
“All three are very talented and they will help us this season,” said Vogt.
The Bulldogs have a young team with 10 seniors, seven juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen.
“We are very happy with our talent,” said Vogt. “We have a lot of depth and the players are working hard. We are going to be competitive and we are looking forward to the start of the season.”
